September 9, 2014 ALCHEMIE SPA: BEST NATURAL NAIL SALON IN LOS ANGELES

Alchemie Spa has been named “Best Natural Nail Salon” in Los Angeles by Well+Good Los Angeles! Click here to see the feature.

At Alchemie, we use Vegan SpaRitual and Butter London polishes which are free of DBA, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Parabens, Phthalate. We use products that are not tested on animals and environmentally friendly. Our Acetone-free natural nail polish remover and organic lotions and oils will leave your nails stronger and healthier, infusing it with necessary nutrients and vitamins.

Your health, safety and sanitation are our number one priorities. In addition to the organic products we use, we clean and sanitize all tools and equipment after each client in a hospital grade autoclave. Tools are kept in sanitary pouches to avoid any contamination. Files and buffers are never reused and are disposed or given to you at the end.

Why Organic and Natural Nail Care?

Harmful chemicals and toxins, such as the “toxic trio” (Toluene, Phthalate and Formaldehyde), severely affect the health of your nails and skin. According to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, Toluene, an aromatic solvent that contributes to the smooth finish of nail polish, can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and short-term memory loss. Furthermore, Toulene can irritate the eyes, throat and lungs, damage the nervous system and potentially harm an unborn child. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which keeps polish from becoming brittle, also can cause reproductive harm. Formaldehyde, a nail hardener, which is used in a wide variety of products including air fresheners and the Brazilian Blowout hair straightener, is a known carcinogen linked to cancer. Acetone irritates the skin, dries out the nails and could cause allergic reactions to the skin and/or harm the respiratory system.

Tips for Healthy Nail Care

1. Minimize..or better yet, eliminate, the use of harsh chemicals and tools. Buy organic and non-toxic nail products, such as those that are water-based and “three-free” (no toluene, phthalate and formaldehyde). For those who are local to our Santa Monica spa, we carry the latest selection of non-toxic + all natural polishes.

2. Moisturize daily! Use an organic lotion and/or essential oils to keep hands and cuticles hydrated to avoid cracking and peeling. We love Body Deli’s Hand+Body lotions, which contain natural botanical oils and herbal extracts that keep skin soft and supple without feeling greasy.

3. Eat foods that are rich in Biotin, a B vitamin that benefits your hair, skin and nails, such as increasing nail thickness and preventing nails from splitting and breaking, such as blueberries, swiss chard, avocados and soy beans. Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, can also help protect and repair your skin and nails. Foods rich in Vitamin E include apples, asparagus, turnip greens, spinach and tomatoes, along with vegetable oils, such as olive oil.

4. Protect with Sunscreen! Your hands and feet are just as susceptible to harmful UV rays. We recommend Suntegrity products which contain natural ingredients and non-toxic preservatives. Zinc oxide provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, while super anti-oxidants and amino acids enhance protection and help with skin repair.
